Seen elsewhere: I have asked ChatGPT to predict Ramaphosa’s address

I have asked ChatGPT to predict Ramaphosa’s address that he will deliver to the nation tomorrow. I don’t think AI could be wrong.

Below is a fictional speech by President Cyril Ramaphosa, written in his characteristic tone and format by AI, in response to the crisis involving the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner and allegations of high-level corruption and complicity in political murders:

Address to the Nation by President Cyril Ramaphosa

Sunday, 12 July

Union Buildings, Pretoria

My Fellow South Africans,

Tonight, I address you at a moment of deep concern for our country. Over the past few days, our nation has been shaken by serious allegations made by the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner of Police, directed at senior government leaders, including the Minister of Police.

These allegations are grave. They speak not only to issues of corruption and misconduct, but to the most disturbing and dangerous claims of complicity in political killings – crimes that have robbed families of their loved ones, and communities of their leaders.

As your President, I wish to assure you: this matter is receiving the full attention of the highest office in the land.

Let me be unequivocal. No one – no matter their title, position, or history of service – is above the law. Our Constitution demands accountability. Our people expect justice. And our democracy can only survive when the truth is upheld, no matter how uncomfortable or inconvenient it may be.

We must be careful not to allow emotion, speculation, or political agendas to cloud our judgement. We must allow the processes of law and investigation to take their course.

To this end, I have directed the following actions:

  • Firstly, I have instructed the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to open an immediate and urgent investigation into the claims made by the KZN Provincial Commissioner.
  • Secondly, I have asked the Public Protector, in consultation with the Judicial Inspectorate for Security Services, to conduct an independent assessment of all claims related to political interference in policing.
  • Thirdly, and most significantly, I will be appointing a Retired Constitutional Court Judge to chair a Commission of Inquiry, with full subpoena powers, to investigate the nexus between political violence, law enforcement failure, and corruption in KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.

I have met with leaders of our security services, including the National Police Commissioner, the heads of the intelligence services, and the Minister of Defence. I have instructed them to work in full cooperation with all investigations, and to ensure that the safety of whistleblowers and witnesses is prioritised and protected.

My Fellow South Africans,

This is not the time for panic. It is the time for calm, for resolve, and for clarity. Let us remember who we are: a people who have faced down tyranny before. A people who have chosen peace over violence, law over chaos, and reconciliation over revenge.

We must not allow rogue elements or political factions – inside or outside of government – to destabilise our democracy.

Let me be clear: should any member of my executive be found to have violated the law or betrayed their oath of office, they will be held fully accountable. This government will not protect the corrupt. We will root them out, no matter where they are found.

To the people of KwaZulu-Natal: I see your pain. I hear your concerns. You deserve leadership that is honest, police who protect and serve without fear or favour, and a government you can trust.

To all South Africans: I ask for your patience as due process unfolds. I ask for your vigilance in guarding against misinformation. And I ask for your unity, for this nation cannot afford to be divided in a time such as this.

We will emerge from this stronger, more transparent, and more just.

May God bless South Africa. May God protect her people.

I thank you.
