Born in Durban in 1961, Sally-Ann Murray received her PhD in English from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where she is currently an Associate Professor in the Programme of English Studies.

 

Sally-Ann was the recipient of the Arthur Nortje/Vita Award in 1989 and the Sanlam Poetry Award in 1991. She has been the chair of the Poetry Africa Schools' Poetry Festival (from 1997 to 2005) and is a longstanding adjudicator of the Alan Paton/Douglas Livingstone Creative Writing Competition.

 

Her poetry has appeared in EAR, Staffrider, Illuminations and Agenda, and has been anthologised in The Heart in Exile, Breaking the Silence: A Century of SA Women’s Poetry and Worldscapes. Her work has most recently appeared in Fidelities XIII: a Selection of Contemporary South African Writing (2006), Imagination in a Troubled Space (Poetry Salzburg, 2004), and The New Century of South African Poetry (Ad Donker, 2003).

 

She has published two collections of poetry: Shifting (Carrefour, 1992) and open season (HardPressd, 2006). Murray lives in Durban with her husband and two children.
