Dark Video is a sensational new South African thriller from debut writer Peter Church that has started creating waves in only the first month of its release. Set in and around Cape Town, it plots the descent of a star UCT student’s descent into a sinister world of online video trading, and features a gripping opening chapter, a memorable climax in the waters of False Bay and an unexpected twist in the tail.

With an innovative dual launch – one at Maverick’s revue bar for 100 men, followed by one at Buitenverwachting restaurant for 100 women – and a cutting-edge micro-website that includes the first chapter, the book has already generated a flood of positive feedback, and been hailed as a dark and disturbing page-turner.

Vivien Horler writes in The Argus, “Peter Church’s debut novel grabs you by the throat in the first six pages and doesn’t let go.”

Tracy Lynn Chemaly of Top Billing magazine says, “What a twist at the end! Well done. When can I watch the movie?”

Louise Mann of Leserskring says, “A truly roller-coaster ride … This author will certainly have an international market if he is promoted and marketed in the correct way. Go for it.”

And proving it’s causing a stir, a top monthly women’s magazine recently pulled its glowing review of the book in its July issue due to the explicit nature of some of the scenes.

Initial sales have been impressive. In Week 24 of 2008, Dark Video sold 259 copies according to the Neilsen BookScan, placing it in the Top 20 for Adult Fiction. The only South African authors higher on the list were Wilbur Smith and John van de Ruit.

With strong interest and support in Cape Town, the author’s hometown, the time has come for Dark Video to go national … Careful where you click.
