Odeion Quartet Plus One to Perform in Pretoria

  • 0

The highly respected Odeion Quartet, resident at the University of the Free State (UFS), is joining forces with clarinettist Danrè Strydom in a performance of Brahms’s Quintet B minor on Sunday 14 September at 16:00 in the Enoch Sontonga Hall on the Unisa Sunnyside Campus.

The other works on the programme will be the String Quartet no 7 in F sharp minor, Op 108 by Shostakovich and the String Quartet no 2 in A minor, Op 13 by Mendelssohn.

The Odeion String Quartet was constituted in 1991 as the permanent full-time resident String Quartet at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein and is at present the only resident String Quartet at a South African University.

The current members are Samson Diamond as Leader of the Quartet, Sharon de Kock, second violinist, Jeanne-Louise Moolman, violist and Anmari van der Westhuizen, cellist.

Exciting new opportunities for learners and students to be taught by excellent lecturers at the music department of the UFS were created with the appointment of the current members.

The players also strengthen the Free State Symphony Orchestra significantly, since they fill the four principal positions in the string section.

Clarinettist Danrè Strydom studied at the University of the Free State, the Jacobs School of Music in Indiana, USA and in Belgium at the Royal College of Music, Ghent.

She played ad hoc for the Brussels Philharmonic for five years, recording several successful soundtracks, including that of the Oscar-winning film The Artist.

She is now woodwind lecturer at the UFS’s  Odeion School of Music, where she is completing her PhD studies.

Tickets for this event on Unisa’s Sunnyside Campus are sold only at the door at R95 for adults and R75 for students and pensioners.
