One of a kind, Hermanus FynArts is a fusion of Festival and Winter School; a blend of visual, intellectual and creative stimulation with a vibrant social buzz.

It is 10 days filled with exciting events in intimate venues: cosy coffee shops, small art galleries, restaurants, wine cellars and tasting rooms - there will be no marquees, street food or road closures.

The following are already on the programme:

 

Exhibitions: At least 14 galleries and other venues in the centre of town,  as well as nine wine farms on the Hermanus Wine Route will each showcase a special exhibition of one of the visual arts  - painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography. 

Music: Gala concerts, recitals and intimate soirées at unexpected venues.

Food and Wine: Daily High Teas, Fine Dining and pre- and post-movie Special Menus; Blending your own Wine and Cookery Demonstrations; Pairings and Tastings.

Illustrated talks, panel discussions and interviews by experts on a wide range of topics.

Courses and Workshops for all levels of participants: ceramics, photography, painting, writing, cookery. Courses vary from one hour talks, to three days. 

Live art demonstrations and painting en plein air.

Transport: a complimentary hop on-hop off bus and three hop on-hop off  rickshaw bicycles will connect the central exhibitions. Wine Route Shuttles, at an affordable winter rate, will link exhibitions at participating wine farms along the Hermanus Wine Route.

 Cinematography: popular early SA films will be screened twice daily by courtesy of the National Film, Video and Sound Archives. A special selection of classic, old-time Hollywood films may be viewed daily at the Movie-Go-Round vintage mini-theatre. No charge for either.

Outdoor activities at Hermanus FynArts: daily walks in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve accompanied by a member of the Hermanus Botanical Society; Fynarts Wine Trails to explore on foot or mountain bike.

 


 

THE LINE-UP OF SOME OF THOSE ALREADY SIGNED UP INCLUDES:

MUSIC

Camerata Tinta Barocca, with a 16 piece orchestra led by Quentin Crida and special guest Richard Cock,presents the opening concert for FynArts:Bay Baroque.

Angelo Gobbato, doyenne of opera,will perform a very special concert, Songs my Mother Taught Me, to celebrate his 70th Year. A premire-of-a-kind, Angelo performs these songs in public for the first time in 60 years for Hermanus FynArts.

Richard Cock and a specially composed 80-strong FynArts Choir with Songs of Praise

Zanne Stapelberg, soprano, and pianist Kathleen Tagg will thrill audiences with their electrifying, passionate and highly acclaimed Soul of Fire. A consummate performance of Spanish and Latin-American music.

Charl du Plessis Jazz Trio, with Charl du Plessis (piano), Werner Spies (bas) and Hugo Radyn (drums) will jazz it up at the Municipal Auditorium. The Trio is one of the most versatil and respected crossover ensembles in South Africa.

 

SCULPTURE

Dylan Lewis, one for the foremost figures in contemporary sculpture and widely recognised as one of the world's leading sculptors of the animal form. Dylan will exhibit a sample of his work on the lawns in front of the Marine Hotel. Smaller pieces will be housed indoors.

Guy du Toit, one of South Africa's most accomplished sculptors, revels in form, concept and media for their own sakes and invites his audience to invent dialogue themselves. Works from the series, Talking Hares, will be found around the lake at Sumaridge Wine Farm, with smaller pieces indoors.

 

 

CERAMICS

Ardmore Ceramics will present an exhibition at the Marine Hotel.

Ceramic Art Exhibition: at least nine foremost ceramicists will each exhibit five pieces in a group exhibition at the historic Windsor Hotel:

National Art Competition Special Exhibition: the work of 20 finalists in a National Competition sponsored by the SA National Space Agency, based in Hermanus, will be uniquely exhibited on barrelheads at the Bouchard Finlayson Wine Cellar.

 

WHO's COOKING WHAT?

Peter Tempelhoff (Grande Chef of the McGrath Collection of restaurants) and Jenny Morris, aka the Giggling Gourmet (well-loved radio and TV presenter, celebrity chef and caterer), will have a sizzling cook off at the Marine Hotel.

Hermanus Chefs Showcase at the Classroom Restaurant. Six of the top Hermanus chefs join forces to prepare a sumptuous six-course meal, perfectly paired with select wines from six different cellars. Each course will be introduced by the chef who created the dish, and the select wine-maker.

Jenny and Albin Kilzer, from Knysna will present there ever-popular party evening to celebrate food: 'You Look, We Cook' - a three course dinner (incl nibbles before and coffee and biscuits, after). Tarting up the Tart' and other courses. Albin and Jenny Kilzer both have a passion for cooking, teaching and people.

COURSES

Christopher Hope, winner of numerous prestigious literary awards, including the Whitbread Prize, David Higham Memorial Prize, and short-listed for the Man Booker Prize. By popular request, Christopher will offer his Writers' Course in Hermanus.

Richard Smith, artworld maverick, presents 'Drawing with Paints'. For the past ten years, Richard's work consists mainly of large portraits that he has 'interfered' with ... The portraits are of people he has met and whose faces interest him .

Angelo Gobbato, doyenne of opera in South Africa and accomplished lecturer, in a series of three lectures on the life of Guiseppe Verdi to celebrate his bicentenary.

Ina Millman, Johannesburg sought-after art teacher, presents two painting courses - 'En Plein Air' at La Vierge wine farm teaching landscape painting, and 'Feathered Friends', a two-day workshop painting birds of your choice.

Riana Scheepers, Afrikaans writer, presents a three-day writers' workshop at Hermanuspietersfontein - 'Skryf en Kreatiewe Denke'.  Hierdie kursus is dus nie slegs vir die literer-begaafde persoon nie, maar vir almal wat betower word deur die wonderwereld van woorde.

 Dawn Garisch, accomplished poet, presents 'Taking in the View' - Poetry as Window and Mirror'.  This three day course will assist you to become more present and sensate to that which wants to be written.

 

TALKS, READINGS and ILLUSTRATED TALKS

Richard Cock presents his hilarious and insightful glimpse of the life of an Orchestra Conductor: Conduct Unbecoming.

Wilna Snyman, Trix Pienaar, en Sandra Kotze dra voor ons mooiste Afrikaans gedigte.

Carl Becker, artist, looks at things from a different angle. JH Pierneef's Station Panels are cornerstones of South African landscape painting. Travel with Carl to find out whether those alluring places ever really existed.

Michael Mitchell, a stage set designer for Cape Town Opera, has had his work showcased widely in South Africa and overseas; he will highlight the relationship between art and stage set design in Great Artists and their Stage Sets.

Dale Elliott, artist, known for his paintings of the Boland and his popular painting courses. Dale is the only South African artist to have been invited by Nederburg to exhibit - twice - in the Nederburg Manor House during the annual Nederburg auction. Join Dale and Mel en plein air.

Derric van Rensburg, known internationally for his impressionist paintings. Inspired by the Overberg, Derric is well-known for his colourful lanscapes, the vineyards of the Western Cape, and abstract wildlife. Watch Derric at work on a wine farm.
