Wits Amphitheatre: DETOURS opens its doors!
Wits School of Arts / Dramatic Arts and Wits Theatre present
Take a different route. Experience the body in fresh and innovative ways
DETOURS opens its doors! Running from the 8th-26th May 2012 at the Wits Theatre Complex, DETOURS promises a stimulating line up of students and young professionals’ work. The programmes includes works by: Wits Third and Fourth year Physical Theatre students who have been guided by professionals such as award winning Bailey Snyman, Jane Crewe and visiting scholar Professor Esther Haeusler.
Move A Side
Move A Side is a highly experimental piece that focuses on the simple notion of bodies moving in a space and the ways in which we use our bodies to navigate space. How do we move from point A to point B and back again? Through a series of games and simple task based exercises, this ensemble work explores the idea of group dynamic, group movement and the ways in which individuals bodies move in a group to create images, shapes and to complete a common task. Move A Side is an exciting collaborative game between Joni Barnard, WSOA second and third year students and one WSOA alumni.
Pathways and Passages
Pathways and Passages: Wits Physical Theatre III (facilitated by Bailey Snyman)
The Physical Theatre III class of 2012 will present their first choreographic works as part of the Detours Festival. The task for these exam works is to conceptualise and craft an 8-10 minute trio. These young choreographers have been challenged to merge the choreographed language with an integrated vocal performance. Students have been guided through a rigorous conceptual process and have emerged with 4 innovative, dynamic and challenging short choreographic works.
Beat the Heart
Beat the Heart: Wits Physical Theatre IV (facilitated by Professor Esther Haeusler)
Featuring the exam work of Wits Physical Theatre IV students, this work constitutes a collection of solos. Each student was tasked with conceptualising and choreographing a solo dance piece. As a further development, all of the works are pulled together, resulting in 'Beat the Heart', a dance performance about reality and fantasy, rituals and transformation, words, sounds and gestures.
