Dansbytes 2: The mini-festival of dance performed by the industry's talented young artists

Here's your chance to see South Africa's young hip dancers and choreographers in action – and the latest work from the brand new Standard Bank young artist for dance, Fana Tshabalala. Funded by The National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, The Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative (FATC) presents Dansbytes 2; its follow-up to the previous very successful mini festival that features the brilliant new choreographic work of FATC and artists in residence.

Dansbytes 2 takes place December 6 to December 8. It is broken up into two programmes that feature innovative and exciting choreographers – Tshabalala, Athena Mazarakis, Irven Teme, Charlston van Rooyen, Thulani Chauke, Thabo Kobeli and Thami Majela.

FATC has built up a name for itself as an alternative platform for the development of new work and it is no accident that Tshabalala is part of the company. He started his career within the performing industry by being involved in different community groups before being accepted as a student at the Moving into Dance Mophatong FETC in Performing Arts. After several acclaimed works, he became a Moving into Dance’s Performance Company member and is applying his teaching skills in its Open Class programme. He teaches a signature style Afrofusion and contemporary dance, and his classes are very popular.

“We were so excited and thrilled for Fana. It is a testament to his talent and skill, and it is an honour to work with him and see this talent develop,” said founding member and artistic director of The Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative, PJ Sabbagha, himself a recipient of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Dance, in 2005.

“These awards are prestigious and offer our most promising artists national exposure and acclaim. For example, the winners feature on the main programme of the National Arts Festival, Grahamstown and receive financial support, as well as a cash prize, so it is brilliant both for Fana personally and for the Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative to be associated with him.”

The two programmes feature the following dances:

‘Between us’ focuses on using the senses to define what is shared in a relationship, and appreciating the present moment so there are no regrets, only hope for the best in the moments to come, It features Fana Tshabalala as choreographer and performer, and he is joined by dancer Thulani Chauke. It runs for 20 minutes.

‘Passing Thoughts’ is choreographed , written by and performed by Thabo Kobeli and tackles the interpretation, projection and reaction to one's own passing thoughts. It runs for 25 minutes, and sees a change in perspective or reframing of the mine when one realised that one is stuck and free to oneself; a slave of one's own thoughts caged in one's own thinking capacity.

‘Seconds’ is choreographed by Irven Teme and features Teme, Tshabalala, Charlston van Rooyen and Thembi Nkosi. It runs for 25 minutes and focuses on time, time with goes to waste and is lost. It poses the question: How could time be timeless within what is limiting and calculating?

‘Beside Myself’ is a study of the body that asks how the body, when inscribed with trauma, frozen by memory, or inert with the weight of experience, is expected to continue moving, continue being. It is choreographed by Athena Mazarakis in collaboration with Tertia Coetzee and is performed by Coetzee. It runs for 18 minutes.

‘So Close To Life’ displays life as an opportunity to experience the universe and explore the possibilities out there. Different incidents add meaning to life and make it even more enriching. The 20 minute production is choreographed and performed by Van Rooyen and Chauke.
