NothandoInterview with Nothando Zungu

Congratulations on being one of the Sing 'it finalists! Tell us a bit more about yourself.

I am from Pietermaritzburg, but grew up in Mandeni, a small town next to Stanger. I enjoy going out with friends, listening to music and writing songs on the odd occasion. I studied logistics and supply chain at Damelin and I am currently working at BPG Mass Appraisals. I would love to learn to play a musical instrument, and plan to begin lessons soon.

How did you feel when you found out that (insert band) chose your song?

I was super-excited and honoured! I had a moment of disbelief when I heard the news.

Was this the first time that you’d written a song, or are you an avid songwriter?

It was the first time I allowed someone else to read it – I usually just write for myself in secret.

Why do you think your entry stood out?

When I wrote the song I actually had The Soil in mind and I thought that "Tap Tap" was the kind of song they could sing and that it would go far.

The bands were allowed to interpret your lyrics in any way they liked. What is the song about for you, though?

Basically my love for music and my secret affair with it. At times I find myself dancing or tapping my feet to a beat that I’ve made up in my head and people around can't hear it ... (I'm sure it looks weird to an outsider!)

Where and how did you write the song?

I was actually sitting at home, chilling with my good friend, and the chorus just came to my head. I sang it out to her and she was impressed, so I put pen to paper and the words started flowing.

Any special plans with the R5 000 prize money?

Not yet, but I’m sure I’ll think of something good to do with the money.

Why should people vote for your song and what would it mean to you if you won the R50 000 grand prize?

I do think my song is unique and I hope that a lot of people can relate to the lyrics. It's a fun song! Winning the R50 000 would mean the world to me because I can then afford to learn a bit more  about music and hopefully become a well-known songwriter.

The Soil
Interview with The Soil

Working through over 2 000 entries is a daunting task. How did you go about it? And what were you looking for?

We came up with a melody first and were look for edgy lyrics that were filled with catchy rhyming words.

Why did you choose Nothando’s lyrics? What stood out for you?

Her writing was very similar to how we construct our lyrics and she had a playful element in them that was hard to overlook.

How did you go about interpreting the song?

We set the scene in a Motown era and the concept overlapped into our vocal performance.

What would it mean to you if the song wins?

It has a feel-good and dance rhythm to it and we hope that this song will get the whole of Mzansi dancing!
